We began keeping bees a few years ago because we got interested in Flow Hives. You can check out Flow Hives at www.honeyflow.com We were seduced into thinking bee keeping was easy. Not so. It took time to learn how to manage bees and harvest their honey. Harvesting the honey is much easier than the usual method which requires removing frames, cutting and extracting the honey from the wax and then spinning to remove the honey. With the Flow Hive a key is turned and the honey flows out. In the picture above the honey is pouring into the mason jars. We have four hives now. One of the hives is quite large and seems to be almost ready to give use our first honey of the year. We hope to have plenty of honey to sell. We have just emptied the first of the hives to be full. So far we are selling the honey through the Chelsea Farmers Market online. A one cup jar with net weight (honey is heavier than water) 12 fl oz for $7.00 and a pint jar with net weight of 24 fl oz for $13.00. |
